Disc Brushes for All Types of Floor Scrubber Machines

Disc brushes — also known simply as scrub brushes — are used on floor scrubbers, scrubber-dryers, and combination machines. They are suitable for all types of cleaning tasks and perform exceptionally well on hard floors, textured surfaces, uneven flooring, and slip-resistant surfaces.

How a Floor Scrubber Works

During operation, the scrubber dispenses cleaning solution from the fresh-water tank onto the floor.
One or two rotating disc brushes scrub the surface, loosening dirt and debris.
The dirty water is then collected by the squeegee assembly and transported to the recovery tank — leaving the floor clean and dry.

Common Bristle Types

Choose the Right Bristle Type for the Best Cleaning Results

PPL-POLYPROPYLENE

A Versatile Material for Disc Brushes

Polypropylene (PPL) is a synthetic material available in a wide range of bristle diameters and colours. The bristle thickness — determined by the fibre diameter — affects both scrubbing performance and how well the brush adapts to the floor surface.

PPL is the most common material used in disc brushes and cylindrical brushes for all types of scrubber machines, thanks to its durability, flexibility, and consistent performance. It also offers high resistance to chemicals and oils, making it a reliable and long-lasting choice for professional floor cleaning applications.

Which Fibre Type Is Right for Your Floor?

PPL 0.3 mm – For Gentle Cleaning & Polishing

This fine, soft fibre is ideal for polishing and cleaning lightly soiled, slip-resistant floors and smooth surfaces such as marble.
It is also suitable for shampoo cleaning of carpeted floors.
PPL 0.3 mm reaches into joints and small irregularities without damaging the floor finish — comparable to a white floor pad.

Best for: light soil, delicate floors, polishing, indoor cleaning.

PPL 0.6 mm – The All-Round Choice for Daily Cleaning

A medium-soft fibre designed for light to moderate cleaning of most hard floors, including stone, ceramic, terrazzo, marble, vinyl, and linoleum.
In terms of performance, PPL 0.6 mm corresponds to a red or blue floor pad — the industry’s standard for daily maintenance cleaning.

Best for: routine cleaning, medium soil, most commercial floor types.

PPL 0.9 mm and Coarser – For Heavy-Duty Scrubbing

This robust, stiffer bristle is ideal for medium to heavy scrubbing of hard floors, especially concrete and industrial floors with ingrained dirt.
Because of its aggressiveness, testing on a small area is recommended before use on more delicate surfaces.
PPL 0.9 mm corresponds roughly to a green floor pad.

Best for: industrial environments, structured concrete, heavy soil, warehouses, workshops.

NYLON

SLITSTARKT MATERIAL FÖR SKURBORSTAR

Nylon is a synthetic material similar to polypropylene (PPL), but with a significant advantage: superior wear resistance. Unlike some materials, nylon does not absorb water, ensuring that the fiber stiffness remains consistent throughout use. This means a nylon fiber brush delivers at least the same cleaning results as a PP brush, while offering a considerably longer lifespan.

Although nylon is somewhat more expensive than PPL, its extended durability makes it a cost-effective choice over time. The selection of fiber thickness is determined by the type of flooring to be cleaned, following the same principles as for PP brushes. Nylon is available in fiber diameters ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 mm, and while black and white are the most common colors, it comes in a wide variety of color options.

WEAR INDICATOR - WHEN TO REPLACE THE BRUSH?

The first image shows a brush equipped with a wear indicator, a feature that is becoming increasingly common in the industry. This smart design makes it easy to determine the right time for replacement: when the white indicator fiber has worn down to the same length as the green fiber bundle, the brush should be replaced.

MIXFIBER

A NATURAL, VERSATILE FIBER

Mixed fiber, also known as union mix, natural fiber, or 5K, is a fiber type that combines natural fibers such as palmyra (from the palmyra palm) or tampico (from the agave plant). Additionally, synthetic alternatives are available that offer similar properties.

PROPERTIES AND APPLICATIONS

The fiber mix varies in diameter from 0.2 to 0.6 mm, which affects the cleaning performance. Therefore, a test area is always recommended before use to ensure optimal results. Mixed fiber brushes are used for cleaning and polishing:
✔ Marble
✔ Vinyl and linoleum
✔ Tile and ceramic floors

ADVANTAGES OF MIXED FIBER BRUSHES

If static electricity becomes an issue when using other fiber types, switching to a mixed fiber brush often resolves the problem. In terms of both scrubbing power and surface gentleness, mixed fiber is comparable to a red or blue floor maintenance pad. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.

TYNEX

HEAVY-DUTY BRUSHES FOR DEMANDING CLEANING TASKS

Tynex, nylon-grit, or grit brushes feature nylon fibers impregnated with silicon carbide abrasive, making them extremely wear-resistant and durable. Unlike conventional brushes, they maintain their stiffness even during wet cleaning, as the fibers do not soften when exposed to moisture. The material's chemical resistance and high melting point make these brushes ideal for the most challenging environments.
A key advantage of Tynex brushes is that the abrasive is embedded throughout the entire fiber—not just on the surface—ensuring consistent performance throughout the brush's extended lifespan. These disc brushes are compatible with all scrubbing machines and are specifically designed for hard, heavily soiled surfaces such as industrial concrete floors, clinker, and brick.

WHICH TYNEX BRUSH FITS YOUR FLOOR?

TYNEX 0,6 MM – "LITE GRIT" (320 GRIT)

Used for light to normal cleaning of floors such as vinyl, concrete, terrazzo, and marble. Corresponds to a red floor maintenance pad. The irregular bristle length ensures effective cleaning even on uneven surfaces and in grout lines. Tynex brushes outlast traditional floor pads by up to 100:1, making them more economical and environmentally friendly. The silicon carbide remains effective throughout the brush's lifespan, maintaining consistent cleaning performance.

TYNEX 0,8 MM – "MIDLITE GRIT" (180 GRIT)

Suitable for cleaning soiled hard floors such as concrete, clinker, and terrazzo. Corresponds to a blue and green floor maintenance pad. The flexible bristles adapt to uneven surfaces and clean effectively in narrow grout lines, reducing the need for multiple passes. Thanks to the abrasive grit being dispersed throughout the entire bristle cross-section, the brush maintains aggressive cleaning power on all sides and tips. Unlike traditional pads, these brushes don't clog or load up with debris, staying fresh and effective throughout their service life.

TYNEX 1,2 MM – "DYNA GRIT" (80 GRIT)

Designed for heavy-duty cleaning of heavily soiled surfaces, such as oily workshop floors. It can also be used for polish removal during floor renovation. Corresponds to a brown floor maintenance pad. This is the most popular aggressive Tynex brush for general scrubbing and stripping applications. The silicon carbide-impregnated bristles are self-replenishing as the brush wears, maintaining consistent cleaning effectiveness throughout its lifespan. Excellent for cleaning wide grout lines and removing grease from concrete floors, this brush must always be operated in a wet environment.

TYNEX 1,5 MM – "MAGNA GRIT" (46 GRIT)

Recommended for industrial floors in combination with heavy-duty scrubbing machines. Corresponds to a black and High Pro floor maintenance pad. This is the most aggressive Tynex brush available and must always be operated in a wet environment due to its exceptional cleaning power. Ideal for removing the heaviest soils and grease from unsealed concrete and for stripping sealed concrete floors in automotive shops, warehouses, and industrial settings. The heavy-gauge nylon bristles with larger silicon carbide particles deliver unsurpassed performance where traditional scrubbing pads fail, making it the ultimate solution for the toughest cleaning challenges.

TEST THE BRUSH ON A SMALL AREA FIRST

Tynex brushes excel at cleaning uneven floors and deliver highly effective results. However, if you are new to using Tynex brushes, we strongly recommend conducting a test on a small, inconspicuous area first to verify that your floor surface can tolerate the aggressive cleaning action.

Q&A ABOUT SCRUBBING BRUSHES

Disc brushes are compatible with all types of scrubbing machines and excel in more demanding environments where traditional floor pads fall short. They are ideal for high-traffic and challenging surfaces such as exhibition halls, sports and recreation facilities, warehouses, production facilities, and parking garages.

Scrubbing machines with brushes are ideal for more demanding environments where traditional floor pads fall short. They excel in high-traffic and challenging areas such as exhibition halls, sports and recreation facilities, warehouses, production facilities, and parking garages.

Scrubbing machines with brushes can be used on virtually all types of surfaces. However, to achieve optimal cleaning results, it is essential to select the appropriate brush fiber type based on both the surface material and the type of soiling that needs to be removed.

A scrubbing brush consists of three main components:

  • Body: Almost always made of plastic, though wooden bodies are occasionally used
  • Bristles: Typically manufactured from PP (polypropylene), but also available in mixed fiber, nylon, or steel
  • Coupling/Flange: The attachment mechanism on the brush's upper side that connects and secures the brush to the machine's drive hub

Brush bristles are generally oval-shaped, which means measurements will yield two different values. The diameter is calculated as the average of these two measurements.

Formula: (Measurement 1 + Measurement 2) ÷ 2 = Bristle Diameter

Example:

  • Measured values: 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm
  • Calculation: (0.8 + 1.2) ÷ 2 = 1.0 mm
  • Result: The bristle diameter is 1.0 mm

Brush lifespan depends on many factors, but there are clear indicators for when replacement is needed:

With Wear Indicator:

  • Some brushes feature a wear indicator—a bundle of bristles in a contrasting color that is shorter than the other bristles
  • When the brush bristles have worn down to the same length as the wear indicator, it's time to replace the brush

Without Wear Indicator:

  • As a rule of thumb, replace the brush when the bristles are approximately 15-20 mm long
  • This typically corresponds to the bristles being worn down to about half of their original length

The choice between disc brushes and floor pads depends on your specific needs. Here's a comparison:

Advantages of Disc Brushes:

  • Better performance on uneven floors: Bristles reach deeper into floor irregularities more effectively than pads
  • Significantly longer lifespan: Brushes outlast floor maintenance pads considerably
  • Cost-effective over time: Despite higher initial cost, the investment pays off in the long run

Consideration:

  • Higher initial cost: Brushes are significantly more expensive to purchase than floor pads

Recommendation: For uneven surfaces and long-term cost efficiency, disc brushes are the superior choice despite the higher upfront investment.
